Chelsea versus Newcastle player ratings: Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson shine but Robert Sanchez struggles again

Chelsea continued their fine start to the Premier League season on Sunday as they beat Newcastle United 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Cole Palmer thought he had opened the scoring within just six minutes when he slotted home Nicolas Jackson's through ball, only to see his effort chalked off for offside.

Just over 10 minutes later, however, Jackson opened the scoring for good, slotting home Pedro Neto's pass after the Portuguese winger had been played in-behind by a superb pass from Palmer.

Alexander Isak equalised for the visitors on 32 minutes, before Palmer then scored what proved to be the winning goal just after the break, the Englishman firing in at Nick Pope's near post after running nearly half the length of the pitch with the ball.

The win saw Enzo Maresca's side jump to fifth in the Premier League table, just one point behind both Aston Villa and Arsenal.

Unsurprisingly, Palmer, and especially his pass to Neto, were the centre of attention post-match.

"This pass over 60 yards, I mean, that's one of the best passes I've seen, never mind this season, but in the Premier League," gushed former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher. "Taking two or three Newcastle players out and then just on a plate for Neto."

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane said of Palmer: "I love watching this kid. Even his awareness when he receives the ball, he knows exactly what's happening but then to execute the perfect pass, you just run and he's going to pick you out."

While Palmer was excellent against the Eddie Howe's side, not everyone in Blue managed quite so stellar performances. Here are Everything Chelsea's player ratings from the win over the Magpies.

Chelsea Player Ratings

Robert Sanchez: 4

Another tough day at the office for the Spaniard. Made some decent stops but his distribution was extremely poor throughout.

Malo Gusto: 7

Caused plenty of problems going forward and was mostly sound in defence. Newcastle's goal game from his flank, but the Frenchman was outnumbered.

Wesley Fofana: 7

Bounced back from an early knock to his knee to put in a solid performance, making a number of crucial blocks and tackles.

Levi Colwill: 7

Was lucky to escape punishment for a clear foul on Bruno Guimaraes on the edge of the box in the first-half, but other than that, oozed confidence and class.

Reece James: 5

Failed to mark Isak for Newcastle's goal and looked generally uncomfortable at left-back. Forward passes often astray.

Moises Caicedo: 8

Excellent. Consistently broke up Newcastle's attacks and distributed smartly. Covered brilliantly to deny Isak an equaliser after the striker had rounded Sanchez.

Romeo Lavia: 7

Transitioned the ball from defence to attack well and got the assist for Palmer's winner.

Cole Palmer: 9 (Man of the Match)

Produced a sublime pass in the build-up to the opener before scoring the winner himself. The Premier League's finest player right now.

Noni Madueke: 5

Didn't track back for Newcastle's goal and was often greedy in attack, choosing to shoot on numerous occasions when a pass would have been the better option.

Nicolas Jackson: 8

On the scoresheet again and showed some lovely touches and turns when coming to collect the ball from deep. Good all-round performance.

Pedro Neto: 7

Offered much more on Chelsea's left-flank than Jadon Sancho has in recent weeks with his positive and direct running. Set-up Jackson's goal and hit the post himself in the second-half.

Mykhailo Mudryk: 6 (Sub)

Stung Pope's palms late on.

Enzo Fernandez: 5 (Sub)

A few misplaced passes proved why Maresca has preferred Lavia as of late.

Christopher Nkunku: 7 (Sub)

Was a menace after replacing Jackson. Won a late penalty that was then overturned.

Marc Cucurella: N/A (Sub)

On too late to judge.
