For young goalkeepers, many aspire to one day be as good as Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon, or Real Madrid and Spain icon Iker Casillas.

Chelsea's Lucas Bergstrom, however, has his sights set elsewhere.

In a recent interview published on Chelsea's official website, the 22-year-old, who joined the Blues from TPS in 2018, was asked if he's now famous in his home town of Pargas, Finland because of his job.

"I have to become the best footballer from the town first, and then maybe," the Chelsea keeper responded. "That’s Jonatan Johansson. I’m still a small fish!"

Johansson, though born in Sweden, began his career in Pargas with local team PIF, where Bergstrom also started his footballing journey.

Like Bergstrom, Johansson then joined TPS, before eventually moving to the Premier League with Charlton Athletic in 2000.

The striker enjoyed a fine start to life at the Valley following his £2.5 million transfer from Rangers, netting 10 goals in his first 20 Premier League games, but struggled thereafter, managing just 17 more over the next five years.

He retired in 2011 after a brief return to TPS, and is now an academy coach at Rangers.

Bergstrom ready to take his chance

Bergstrom has been at Chelsea for six years now, but is still yet to make a senior appearance for the club.

He has, however, featured prominently for the Blues' academy teams, and has picked up some first-team experience while out on loan with both Peterborough United and Swedish outfit IF Brommapojkarna.

Given the long and ongoing wait for a chance to shine at Stamford Bridge, it would be understandable if Bergstrom were frustrated.

He isn't, however, and is instead relishing the challenge.

"The next period is about working up the levels. There is a big pyramid. When you get near the top, there are so many good players," Bergstrom, who has been on the bench for three of Chelsea's games this season, said.

"The differences are small, but they’re huge. It’s also about having a bit of luck and taking your opportunities," he added.
